The American Federation of Teachers PSD United Local #9624 is a union of professionals that champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities. We are committed to advancing these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through the work our members do.

To secure full trade union rights, including the rights to exclusive recognition and collective bargaining, for all employees who are eligible for membership.
To promote such a democratization of the school as will enable all employees to better equip their pupils to take their places in the industrial, social, and political life of the community.
To raise the standards of the education profession by securing the conditions essential to the best professional service.
To seek out available sources of professional development for all members.
To encourage mutual understanding among the membership.
To preserve the integrity, and foster the growth and awareness, of Deaf Culture at PSD.

The mistreatment of any individual worker creates the possibility of mistreatment of every worker.
Workers must come to the support and defense of fellow workers who are threatened.
This creates a balance of power between the employer and the employee.
This is the foundation of solidarity among workers.

The foundation of any union is solidarity and collective action. One of us alone is vulnerable, but together we can be more powerful than the big fish. By choosing to become a member you are swearing into a group whose purpose is to protect and collaborate with you. And just as we will do for you, you will be requested to collaborate and support the union and your fellow members. You will be asked to be involved with demonstrations, to vote, to attend meetings, to be informed, and if you so choose it, to take an active role in ensuring that PSD is a just and equitable place.
PSD employees benefit from having representation and support by AFT irregardless of employee participation. Every eligible employee starts by being a fair share member and the automatic privileges of that position. Fair share members pay .8% dues from their paycheck to go towards the union and supporting your fellow workers.
You can apply to be a full member with the blue card that is distributed by your union representatives. Once you sign the blue membership application card your .8% dues will be increased to 1% membership dues. This gives you access to the AFT membership benefits, the opportunity to vote, newsletters, professional development, updates, and opportunity to serve an active role in the union.
